Varicose vein surgery

Stripping
The junction of the superficial vein is surgically divided and tied-off. The trunk of the vein is stripped out and small incisions are made over the visible varicose veins to remove them. This is the procedure most people refer to when talking of “stripping of varicose veins”. The operation takes between 20 and 50 minutes to perform and is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Recovery from this treatment takes between one and three weeks, depending on the extent of the veins needing surgery and the lifestyle or occupation of the patient needing treatment.

Ambulatory phlebectomy
Minor varicose veins can often be removed under local anaesthesia. Whilst this is a surgical procedure carried out in an operating theatre it is a walk-in, walk-out treatment, which normally allows recovery to normal day-to-day activies within a day or two.
