"Six weeks ago I had EVLT for a bulging and unsightly varicose vein in my right calf. The vein was painful during hot weather and long periods at work and made me feel self conscious during the summer weather – so much so that I had not worn a skirt or been swimming for over 15 years. I made the decision to have EVLT after an informed consultation with Mr Dodd who went through the various options available to me. The main reason for choosing EVLT was to avoid having a general anaesthetic and to decrease my recovery time after the procedure.
For me the procedure was simple and relatively pain free. The most uncomfortable part was the placement of the local anaesthetic which only lasted for a couple of seconds. As well as having the laser treatment, the varicose vein was also removed in order to get a better aesthetic result. I was in theatre for about an hour and was made to feel very comfortable and at ease. There was a nurse with me at all times to talk to and the atmosphere was very relaxed. I was allowed home within an hour of having the treatment.
I wore a compression bandage for five days after the surgery, but could see the results immediately after taking this off. There was quite severe bruising which developed for about a week after and a few tiny cuts where the incisions were made to remove the vein. The skin however was flat where the lumpy vein had once been. I did have some post-operative pain which was to be expected – there was a tightness around my thigh which increased during standing for long periods but which felt better after rest. I returned to work part time after a week and full time after two weeks.
I have been incredibly happy with the results. The bruising has now disappeared and you can no longer see the marks where the incisions were made. The post-operative pain has completely gone. I have been swimming and worn a dress since having the surgery and for the first time in years I cannot wait for the summer to arrive." Miss LN, May 2011.
